Felice Varini Anamorphic Street Art
An art installation that caused huge controversy among locals and historians in France is due for removal this month as the exhibit closes on its scheduled date. Swiss artist Felice Varini was commissioned to create the installation at the medieval fortress. Assisted by local art students that attached thin aluminium strips, they painted yellow to the walled city of Carcassonne. The operation took place during the night, a large projector was used to mark the exact placements of the painted strips. Many locals were at first appalled by what they considered an insult to the heritage of the site and a petition received more than 1,800 signatures. Officials said Felice Varini showed the greatest respect to the architecture and history of the site, no damage was caused to the ancient edifice whatsoever. The world famous artist has been producing anamorphic artwork since the 1970’s.
“I have often met this type of reaction. At first there is incomprehension and then opinions change little by little,” Felice Varini
